Course Report

Cape Wickham Links has ocean views from every single hole, an extreme rarity even among the world’s great coastal courses.

About

Cape Wickham Links, designed by Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver, is a true links course on King Island, Tasmania. Opened in 2016, every hole offers spectacular ocean views, dramatic routing, wide fairways, and strategic design features shaped by the wind and coastal landscape. It is acclaimed as one of Australia’s most stunning courses.

Caddie Tip

Embrace the wind and don’t fight it—choose lower, running shots to navigate the strong westerlies. On the back nine, factor for extra club on approaches, especially at the exposed 12th and 18th, where the coastal wind often adds challenge and excitement.

The Main Challenge

The main challenge is coping with persistent, strong winds that change daily direction. Wide landing areas provide some forgiveness, but precise club selection is needed to score well. The closing stretch—especially 16 to 18—demands strategic play and bold shot-making into exposed terrain.

The Good

Golfers love the extraordinary oceanfront holes, panoramic vistas, and solitude on King Island. The variety in hole designs, natural links turf, strategic options, and ever-changing wind make every round feel adventurous and completely unique.

The Not So Good

Some players note the travel logistics to King Island are challenging, and the remote location can make maintenance inconsistencies more likely, especially after heavy rains or storms. Practice facilities could benefit from further expansion.
