Bill Coore’s partnership with Ben Crenshaw began after both were inspired by the classic writings on golf architecture—a shared passion that became the foundation for one of the world’s most successful design teams.
Bill Coore, born December 19, 1945, in North Carolina, is celebrated for his naturalistic and strategic design philosophy. Growing up near renowned Donald Ross courses, his passion for golf and classic architecture was nurtured from a young age. After graduating from Wake Forest University in 1968, Coore gained valuable experience working with Pete Dye and Associates, where he honed skills in integrating landscapes with golf course construction.
In 1986, he formed a highly successful partnership with former PGA Tour player Ben Crenshaw, blending Coore’s architectural vision with Crenshaw’s playing insight. Their work, including acclaimed projects such as Bandon Dunes and the restoration of Pinehurst No. 2, emphasizes preserving natural terrain and offering multiple strategic options that challenge players while remaining enjoyable for all skill levels.
Coore’s designs reflect a respect for timeless principles combined with modern playability, focusing on harmony with the environment rather than forcing artificial features. His career extends beyond course creation to improving and restoring classic venues, always prioritizing integrity and natural beauty.
