Course Report
The course sits on sandy soil in an area known as the Pinehills, allowing for firm, fast play and a true links-like experience uncommon in New England.
About
Old Sandwich Golf Club is a private course in the Pinehills area of Plymouth, Massachusetts, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2004. The course offers sandy soil, wide fairways, undulating greens, and strategic bunkering. It is consistently noted for its firm, fast conditions and natural aesthetics, delivering strategic interest and a quintessential New England golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Play for position rather than power on most tee shots. The wide fairways offer strategic angles, especially into undulating greens—approaches from the proper side of the fairway matter. On the par 3s, aim for the center as misses can lead to tricky recoveries from deep bunkers or collection areas.
The Main Challenge
Old Sandwich’s greatest test is in managing the wide but strategic landing areas, where position is key to attacking the large, rolling greens. The bunkering and fescue can penalize wayward shots, making course management and approach accuracy essential, especially as putts break significantly on firm, contoured greens.
The Good
Golfers rave about Old Sandwich’s routing and the sheer variety of holes. The firm, sandy soil offers exceptional playing conditions, and the blend of challenging yet fun design makes it rewarding for both low and high handicaps. The pristine setting in native pine barrens and lack of real estate create an immersive, pure golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some golfers wish the course had occasional ocean or broader bay views, given its proximity to Cape Cod Bay. Others desire even more variety in green complexes or more event opportunities for limited member interaction, as it is quite exclusive.
Signature Hole:
#
8
The par 4 8th is often seen as Old Sandwich’s signature hole. With a mildly uphill tee shot that bends to the right, precision is favored over power, and missing left can be penal. Its approach shot highlights the large, elegantly contoured green surrounded by natural sand features for visual drama and challenge.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse is relaxed and elegant, offering locker rooms, dining options, a pro shop, and lounges. Members enjoy attentive service, peaceful outdoor spaces, and facilities that blend naturally with the woodland setting.
Practice Facilities
Expect a full grass driving range, large practice putting green, and short game area with bunkers. Facilities are well maintained and provide plenty of room for all types of practice and warmups, consistent with the club’s high standards.
