Course Report

Lost Farm famously features 20 holes—two extra par 3s to enhance variety and play options—making it unique among top-ranked international links courses.

About

Barnbougle Lost Farm is a highly ranked 20-hole links course on Tasmania’s northeast coast, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The course showcases dramatic dunes and spectacular coastal views, offering strategic play and broad fairways. Opened in 2010 to complement the original Barnbougle Dunes, the course blends minimalist architecture with natural terrain for an engaging, world-class golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Embrace the width of Lost Farm’s fairways but avoid the brutal fescue rough, which punishes errant drives severely. Strategic play off the tee is essential, and pay close attention to wind direction. On exposed green sites, keep the ball low and favor bump-and-run shots whenever possible.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge comes from navigating the shifting winds, dense fescue rough, and elevation changes across towering dunes. Recovery shots from the native grasses are extremely tough, and approaches to large, undulating greens require careful judgment. Precision, creativity, and wind management are vital here.

The Good

Golfers praise the strategic width, dramatic sand dunes, and ocean vistas, with the layout rewarding all skill levels. The experience stands out for world-class architecture paired with natural Tasmanian beauty, and the atmosphere is welcoming yet challenging—making each round memorable.

The Not So Good

While the course conditions are generally excellent, some guests note the bunkers may be inconsistent after storms and that certain areas around the greens can be overly firm. Off-course complaints focus on aspects of lodge service or food options rather than the golf itself.

Clubhouse

The lodge and clubhouse provide a modern restaurant and bar with panoramic views, locker rooms, a spa, and on-site accommodation. The upscale lounge is a favorite for post-round relaxation, and visitors enjoy the convenience of on-site stay and play packages.
