Course Report

Muirfield is one of the only courses in major championship golf laid out as two concentric loops of nine, a revolutionary design introduced by Harry Colt.

About

Muirfield Golf Club, home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, is a classic links course originally designed by Old Tom Morris in 1891, later reimagined by renowned architect Harry Colt in 1925. Consistently ranked among the world’s greatest, it has hosted 16 Open Championships and features subtle, demanding strategy amid coastal terrain.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to wind direction—multiple holes at Muirfield shift orientation, so wind can be a constant factor. On approach shots, favor the center greens and avoid chasing flags protected by deep bunkers; especially on the back nine, where angles and subtle slopes create optical illusions.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at Muirfield lies in its ever-changing wind and firm, fast greens. Bunkers are deep and perfectly placed to penalize mistakes, and the routing means few holes play consecutively in the same direction, requiring constant adjustment and supreme shot-making.

The Good

Golfers love Muirfield for its strategic demands, historic atmosphere, and superbly maintained turf. Each hole offers a unique challenge, rooted in par-defending architecture, and the prestigious clubhouse and staff ensure a memorable experience widely hailed as the pinnacle of Scottish links golf.

The Not So Good

Visitor access is highly limited and tee times are scarce, making planning difficult. Some golfers note rigid dress code policies and strict traditions which can feel intimidating to guests, and pace of play can be affected by group lunches required between nines.

Signature Hole:

#

13

Muirfield’s 13th is a par 3 famed for its narrow green tightly guarded by bunkers and swirling coastal winds. The green’s small target, coupled with the elevation change and perilous sand traps, demand both precision and nerve—making it a highlight and an uncompromising test late in the round.

Clubhouse

Amenities include a historic clubhouse with fine dining, locker rooms, lounges, and formal lunch service. Visitors can expect attentive staff, traditional Scottish hospitality, and opportunities to view golf artifacts and memorabilia unique to Muirfield.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The club offers a spacious short game area, putting green, and limited long-game practice options. Facilities are classic in style rather than modern, reflecting the club’s heritage. Chipping and bunker practice areas are maintained to tournament standards.
