Course Report

Austin Golf Club was founded by a group of passionate local golfers, with Ben Crenshaw himself actively involved in both the design and daily guidance of the club’s minimalist philosophy.

About

Austin Golf Club is a Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore design set in the Texas Hill Country northwest of Austin. The club is renowned for its classic minimalist layout and absence of real estate development or excessive amenities—offering pure golf on scenic, oak-studded terrain. The design leverages natural landforms, with undulating fairways, challenging green complexes, and a tranquil, private setting.

Caddie Tip

Avoid the signature clusters of live oaks—particularly on the 1st, 5th, 7th, 12th, and 15th holes—as their positioning can block critical approach angles. Pay special attention to the size and shape of greens, which vary dramatically and demand precise iron play, especially on shorter par 4s where shallow putting surfaces offer little room for error.

The Main Challenge

Strategic tree placement and dramatic green complexes pose the main challenge: the variety in putting surface size means short irons require accuracy, while long holes demand disciplined positioning. The penal bunkering—especially on holes like the 9th—forces golfers to make confident decisions, while gusty Hill Country winds offer an extra test.

The Good

Golfers especially value the tranquil, secluded setting and the purity of the experience—there’s no housing, minimal outside noise, and a minimalist approach that puts golf above amenities. The shot values, natural Texas Hill Country charm, and Crenshaw’s attention to variety in green size and bunkering are repeatedly cited as highlights.

The Not So Good

Some guests note the lack of traditional club amenities and practice areas. Others would like to see additional shortcuts or more forgiveness off the tee, as the strategic placement of fairway trees and rugged native vegetation can punish inaccurate drives. Occasional dryness of turf in summer draws mild complaints, though this is typical for the region.

Signature Hole:

#

9

No items found.

The 9th hole, a par 5 known as Crenshaw's 'Hell’s Half Acre,' features a 584-yard stretch with a dozen ragged-edged bunkers challenging every shot. The vast and intimidating bunker field requires precision and strategy on both the layup and approach, making it both memorable and demanding for every skill level.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features essential, understated comforts for its members—locker rooms, limited dining service, and a pro shop. Members appreciate the relaxed, informal atmosphere but should not expect the opulence or extensive amenities common at other private clubs.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Austin Golf Club offers basic but well-maintained practice facilities in keeping with its minimalist ethos, including a modest driving range, putting green, and short-game area. There’s a focus on practical golf preparation rather than luxury; instruction may be available for members and guests, but facilities are intentionally understated.
