Course Report

Fancourt Links was built on the site of a former airfield and completed in just 20 months. Gary Player calls it his greatest design achievement.

About

Designed by Gary Player and Phil Jacobs, Fancourt Links is widely regarded as South Africa’s premier golf course. Modeled on classic British Isles links courses, it features undulating fairways, dramatic dune-style landscapes, and pot bunkers. Exclusivity sets The Links apart, with limited access for resort guests and members, making every round memorable.

Caddie Tip

Wind can change club selection dramatically, especially on exposed holes. Trust the caddie’s guidance on reading undulating greens, and avoid attacking left pins on 9 and 11. Play conservatively around deep pot bunkers, and use local lines off the tee for best angles into greens.

The Main Challenge

The real test is navigating the undulating terrain amid ever-present wind. Deep pot bunkers demand precision off tees and fairways, while greenside surrounds punish aggressive shots. The back nine is particularly tough, especially holes 13–18 which combine wind, elevation, and strategic shot values.

The Good

Golfers rave about the authenticity of the links experience, the thoughtful design, and impressive sustainability standards. The massive, undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and views of the Outeniqua mountains create a memorable and visually stunning golfing environment.

The Not So Good

While conditioning is generally excellent, occasional slow recovery and softer turf can occur after seasonal rain. Some visitors find the exclusivity restrictive and desire more accessible tee times for non-resort guests. Green speeds sometimes vary with weather and maintenance cycles.

Signature Hole:

#

18

The 18th hole is a dramatic par 4 featuring sweeping dunes, a semi-blind tee shot, and a challenging approach to a well-guarded green. Framed by the clubhouse and Outeniqua mountains, this memorable finishing hole combines strategic demand with scenic grandeur, often cited as The Links’ defining experience.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse features fine and casual dining, locker rooms, lounges, and pro shop. Additional amenities include spa, gym, and conferencing. Personalized bag service, attentive staff, and elegant architecture enhance the experience.

Practice Facilities
