Course Report

Sand Valley was carved from an ancient glacial sand deposit and features 'The Volcano,' a unique dune visible from the clubhouse, which shapes the routing and vistas for both nines.

About

Sand Valley, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, is a modern public course set on 1,700 acres of rolling sand dunes in central Wisconsin. Opened in 2017, it delivers firm, fast fescue surfaces and dramatic, exposed dunes, bringing true links golf to the Midwest. Recognized for architectural merit and walkability, it offers a distinct and memorable golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Pay careful attention to pin positions and approach angles, especially on crowned greens with severe falloffs—missing in the wrong place can mean tough up-and-downs from deep bunkers or run-off areas. Take a local caddie if possible, as reads on these large, contoured greens are often subtle and essential to scoring.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is mastering approaches to the huge, undulating greens protected by deep, sandy bunkers and steep runoffs. Precision is rewarded; any mistake can leave a tough recovery. Strategic course management is required, especially in unpredictable wind conditions that impact club selection and carry distances.

The Good

Golfers love the firm, fast playing conditions on expansive fescue fairways set against dramatic sand dunes. The walkable routing and natural landscape evoke an authentic links experience, with creative shot-making demanded on every hole. The welcoming resort atmosphere and top-class service make each round a memorable event.

The Not So Good

Some visitors find the greens overly severe, particularly their crowned nature and sharp falloffs into deep bunkers, which can penalize even slight misses. The remote, rural setting means limited off-course amenities or nearby dining, and fees can be considered high for a newer public resort.
