Douglas Grant

About

Douglas Grant designed Pebble Beach Golf Links as an amateur, and the course is considered one of golf's greatest despite his lack of formal design experience.

Douglas Grant was an accomplished American golfer and is best known as one of the original architects of Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the world’s most iconic courses. A native Californian, Grant had spent time in England studying both business and the classic British links style, which influenced his design approach. In 1916, Samuel Finley Brown Morse, seeking to develop and sell property in the Monterey Peninsula, commissioned Grant and fellow amateur champion Jack Neville to lay out Pebble Beach. Although neither were professional architects, their love for the game and keen insight into course strategy produced a layout that maximized the stunning natural coastline and created challenging, memorable holes. Pebble Beach has seen remarkably few changes since their original concept and has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments over the decades. Grant’s role as a co-designer, despite his lack of previous architecture experience, left a lasting legacy in the world of golf, and his influence is evident in Pebble Beach’s continued acclaim.
