Course Report
Pebble Beach was originally designed for free by amateurs Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, who wanted to maintain their amateur status, a rarity for a course that would become so legendary.
About
Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the few courses that feels both timeless and alive. Set high above the Pacific Ocean, it combines natural drama with strategic nuance in a way few layouts can replicate. Built in 1919 on California’s Monterey Peninsula by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, the course was routed to place as many holes as possible along Carmel Bay, creating some of the most recognizable views in golf. The opening holes offer a gentle introduction, but the stretch from the sixth through the tenth along the cliffs defines the course. Narrow fairways, small greens, and shifting winds can quickly turn a promising round into a grind. Framed by crashing surf and windswept cypress, Pebble Beach has hosted six U.S. Opens and continues to deliver a test that blends beauty, history, and championship challenge.
Caddie Tip
Bring plenty of balls and a solid short game. Playing Pebble Beach demands precision and patience, the wind is the greatest equalizer. Adjust club selection for swirling breezes, especially on the exposed holes 6 through 10. Keep shots below the hole on the small, firm greens to avoid tricky downhill putts. Beware the narrow fairways framed by bunkers and cliffs; err left or right and face steep penalties. The iconic par-5 18th requires a well-placed tee shot to avoid trouble and set up an approachable second shot along the coast. Use the natural contours to your advantage, and always respect the ocean’s influence, as terrain and sea breezes shape every shot. Stay focused, manage nerves, and embrace the stunning scenery to enjoy golf at its finest.
The Main Challenge
Pebble Beach's greatest challenge is its small, fast greens—often swept by ocean winds. The stretch from holes 8–10, played along cliff edges, demands both precision and nerve, while the closing holes require confident shot-making under pressure.
The Good
Golfers rave about the incredible ocean scenery and the opportunity to play on legendary holes graced by champions. The sense of history, walkable routing, and the dramatic closing stretch along the cliffs, especially holes 7 through 10 and 17-18, create truly unforgettable memories.
The Not So Good
Many golfers wish for more affordable green fees and an easier booking process, as tee times often require a resort stay and can be booked well in advance. Some visitors also note that busy days can lead to slower rounds and crowded facilities.
Signature Hole:
#
7
The 7th hole, a breathtaking par 3, stretches only about 106 yards but is perched atop a bluff, facing the vast Pacific. Swirling coastal winds and a small, sloped green make club selection and precision vital. This dramatic oceanfront hole is both visually stunning and deceptively challenging.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse at Pebble Beach Golf Links serves as the heart of the resort’s social and golfing experience, elegantly perched beside the 18th green with panoramic ocean views. Guests enjoy access to luxurious locker rooms, a world-class pro shop, and multiple dining venues, ranging from casual fare to fine dining with creative seafood and wood-fired specialties. Classic lounges and outdoor terraces provide a front-row seat to legendary finishing moments, while attentive staff ensure top-tier service and amenities. The clubhouse’s combination of history, comfort, and scenic grandeur offers a memorable gathering place for golfers and visitors alike, making it an integral part of the Pebble Beach mystique.
Practice Facilities
Pebble Beach Golf Academy & Practice Facility offers one of the most comprehensive setups in golf, featuring a 350-yard double-ended natural grass driving range with sculpted target greens and bunkers, a 40,000-square-foot short-game complex with chipping areas and both greenside and fairway bunkers, plus a 4,500-square-foot practice putting green. The Academy also houses three instruction studios packed with advanced technology including robotic swing trainers, 3D motion capture, HD video and computerized putting analysis, and a top-tier club fitting system.
