About

Jack Neville won the first California State Amateur Championship at age 20 in 1912 and remains the only person to have won it five times.

Jack Neville was a pioneering American golf course architect and a highly accomplished amateur golfer, best known for his instrumental role in designing Pebble Beach Golf Links, one of the most iconic courses in the world. As a multiple-time California State Amateur Champion—winning the inaugural event in 1912 and setting a record with five victories—Neville brought a deep understanding of the game to his design work. Despite having no formal experience in course architecture, he, along with Douglas Grant, was chosen to create the Pebble Beach course in the late 1910s. Neville meticulously planned and supervised every detail of its construction, ensuring that as many holes as possible ran along the scenic Pacific coastline, resulting in an enduring layout renowned for its natural beauty and challenging play. Besides his design work, Neville was also deeply involved in golf management and journalism, serving as a golf division manager, secretary of the California Golf Association, and publisher of Pacific Golf & Motor magazine.
