About
John Fought is one of the few major golf architects who has both won the U.S. Amateur and been named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year before designing award-winning courses.
John Fought is a distinguished American golf course architect and former professional golfer, celebrated for his dual impact as both a player and designer. Born in Portland, Oregon, Fought began his golfing journey as a child, influenced by his grandmother. His amateur career peaked with a 1977 U.S. Amateur victory, earning him a place on the 1976 Eisenhower Trophy and 1977 Walker Cup teams. Turning professional in 1977, he won two consecutive PGA Tour events in 1979 and was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. After retiring from competitive play due to injury, Fought shifted to golf course architecture, collaborating early with Bob Cupp before establishing John Fought Design. His acclaimed projects include Pumpkin Ridge, Crosswater, Centennial, and restorations of historic courses like Pine Needles. His work is widely recognized for honoring classic design principles and has hosted over 90 national championships. Fought remains active in golf design, primarily across North America.
