Course Report

Sand Hollow is regularly ranked the #1 public course in Utah and entered Golf Digest's Top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses list in 2023.

About

Sand Hollow Resort Championship Course, designed by John Fought and Andy Staples in 2008, is a celebrated desert layout known for its dramatic red rock backdrops and wide fairways. Set amidst the natural beauty of southern Utah, it consistently ranks among America’s top 100 public golf courses and offers a challenging yet scenic round suitable for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Pay extra attention on holes 11–15; club selection and wind judgment are critical along the cliffside. Fairways are generous but the approach shots require precision to avoid deep bunkers and steep drop-offs. On the greens, play for less break than you see, especially on the back nine, as subtle contours can be deceptive.

The Main Challenge

The biggest test is the stretch from holes 11–15, with cliffside fairways, strong crosswinds, and punishing hazards. Strategic shot placement is critical, especially with elevation changes, deep bunkering, and small, quick greens that require touch. The desert setting also introduces deceptive visuals and tricky lies.

The Good

Golfers rave about the back nine, especially holes 11–15 along the cliff rim, with unparalleled red rock vistas and dramatic elevation changes. The visual spectacle and unique shot values offered by these holes provide a truly memorable and thrilling golf experience, making the course a must-play in the region.

The Not So Good

Peak season pace of play can be slow, especially on the scenic back nine where players often pause to take photos. Some golfers find the walk between holes long and the layout tough to navigate on foot, and summer heat can make conditions challenging for those without a cart.

Signature Hole:

#

15

No items found.

The "Devils Throat" 15th hole at Sand Hollow Championship Course is a dramatic 191-yard par-3 playing over a deep red rock chasm to a narrow, sliver-like green. It’s protected by bunkers short and long, with out-of-bounds left. The striking setting, perched between rock formations, challenges precision and is often called Utah’s version of Cypress Point’s 16th hole.

Clubhouse

Amenities include a modern, comfortable clubhouse with a well-stocked pro shop, locker rooms, and a restaurant offering panoramic course views. Dining options feature a range of casual fare and local flavors. The clubhouse is also equipped for tournaments, events, and resort guest services.

Practice Facilities

The club features a quality driving range, short game area, and putting greens. Golfers will find ample room to practice all facets of their game, with large, well-maintained hitting surfaces. The on-site pro shop offers lessons, equipment, and rentals for a complete training experience.
