Course Report

The Old Course has hosted three U.S. Senior Opens and the 2009 U.S. Women's Open, underscoring its status as a top championship venue.

About

Saucon Valley Country Club's Old Course in Bethlehem, designed by Herbert Strong, is regarded as one of America’s finest parkland courses. Host to multiple USGA championships, it features classic architecture, strategic bunkering, tree-lined fairways, and pristine conditions across rolling Pennsylvania countryside. Private membership ensures a world-class, championship-caliber golf experience for those fortunate to play.

Caddie Tip

Play for the center of the greens rather than hunting pins—small targets and tricky slopes abound. Local caddies stress good position off every tee as wayward drives are punished by thick rough and mature trees. Stay alert around Saucon Creek, particularly on the front nine, where water demand precision.

The Main Challenge

Tight driving corridors lined with mature trees, demanding approaches over Saucon Creek, and deep bunkers challenge shot-making all day. The undulating greens require precision both with irons and putter. The Old Course especially tests nerves under pressure, particularly on USGA event setups.

The Good

Members and guests consistently praise the Old Course’s timeless parkland design, championship-caliber challenge, and immaculate conditions. The scenic backdrops, classic bunkering, and fair but tough layout stand out. The club's rich tournament history adds meaning and excitement each round.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish the Old Course played slightly firmer during the summer months, as the plush Pennsylvania conditions can make the course play somewhat long and reduce rollout. Others note that tree overgrowth in several areas can tighten playing corridors more than the original design intended.

The signature hole is the par 4 sixth, featuring a demanding tee shot over Saucon Creek to a well-guarded fairway. Approach shots must navigate mature trees and greenside bunkers to a large, tricky green. It’s both a beautiful and strategic highlight of the Old Course, demanding accuracy and skill.

Clubhouse

The expansive clubhouse features elegant dining rooms, multiple bars, extensive locker rooms, and banquet spaces. Members enjoy social events, guest accommodations, racquet and swimming amenities, and a modern fitness center. Service is attentive, with a focus on privacy and comfort.

Practice Facilities
