Course Report

The island green 17th at TPC Sawgrass is one of the most photographed holes in golf, with over 100,000 balls estimated to be hit into the water each year by amateurs.

About

Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1980, TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is renowned as one of the world’s premier tournament courses and host of THE PLAYERS Championship. The course features a strategic, balanced layout with challenging water hazards, doglegs, and Dye’s signature mounding, providing a pure test for golfers of all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

On every tee, pay close attention to wind direction—it can shift drastically and affects both the short and long holes. Conservative play yields better results; take extra club to avoid trouble, especially on the finishing stretch. Trust your yardages, avoid unnecessary heroics, and be extra careful on the intimidating 17th.

The Main Challenge

The toughest part of TPC Sawgrass is the relentless pressure from water hazards and Pete Dye’s strategic bunkering. The course demands precise shotmaking, especially on the approach to small, well-defended greens. The final three holes, with windswept fairways and daunting water carries, test every aspect of a player’s skill and nerve.

The Good

Golfers rave about the incredible challenge and thrill of playing a PGA Tour-quality course, especially with famous holes like the 17th and 18th. The pristine conditions, tournament atmosphere, and the chance to walk the same fairways as the pros make every round feel special to visitors from around the globe.

The Not So Good

Many golfers note the high price tag and slow pace of play during busy periods. The course can feel overly penal to mid- and high-handicappers, with water hazards and deep rough punishing errant shots. Availability can also be limited depending on resort bookings and tournament schedules.

Signature Hole:

#

17

This hole measures about 137 yards, yet pressure is immense, with errant shots finding water and the swirling wind adding to the drama every year during THE PLAYERS Championship.

Clubhouse

Expect excellent dining, a spacious and modern locker room, pro shop with exclusive merchandise, full-service lounge, meeting rooms, and access to the Sawgrass Marriott Resort’s spa and resort amenities. The clubhouse experience is tailored to provide VIP service for both golfers and their guests.
