During the renovation of Red Rocks Country Club, Kevin Atkinson designed the sixth hole as a dramatic short par three with a volcano green, giving players stunning views of downtown Denver, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and the Rocky Mountains.
Kevin Atkinson is a notable golf course architect whose career reflects a lifelong passion for the game. A competitive golfer from a young age, Atkinson graduated in 1994 from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies. His early roles included drafting and construction work for Landscapes Unlimited, followed by positions as Associate Architect with both Ault, Clark & Associates and Richard M Phelps Ltd. In 2007, he became Senior Architect of Phelps – Atkinson Golf Course Design, cementing his reputation in the industry. Atkinson’s firm, Atkinson Design Group, based in Morrison, Colorado, has completed new builds, major renovations, and historic restorations both in the U.S. and abroad. His designs, including significant renovations at Red Rocks Country Club and The Club at Ravenna, focus on enhancing playability and environmental stewardship. Under his leadership, many courses have garnered national acclaim and ‘Best Places to Play’ recognition.
