Liam Higgins set a world long-drive record in 1984 by hitting a golf ball 634 yards on a runway at Dublin Airport, a record that stood for more than a decade.
Liam Higgins is an Irish professional golfer most famously associated with Waterville Golf Links in southwest Ireland, where he has been the club’s first and only golf professional in its history. Growing up near Cork, Higgins was immersed in golf from a young age, caddying and playing at Cork Golf Club, an Alister MacKenzie design. Known for his long drives despite his smaller stature, he gained a reputation as a powerful hitter. Higgins competed successfully on the European Tour, winning the 1977 Kerrygold International Classic at his home course.
Later, he enjoyed a successful senior tour career with several wins. Beyond playing, Higgins has been deeply involved in training and development for golfers at Waterville, helping to cultivate the next generation. Waterville itself is renowned for its strategic, windswept links layout, designed with input from John A. Mulcahy and architect Eddie Hackett, with the challenging 16th hole named “Liam’s Ace” after Higgins made a hole-in-one there.
