Course Report

The course sits on a 220-acre headland jutting two miles into the Atlantic, with caves beneath the fairways and a centuries-old lighthouse at the tip.

About

Designed by Ron Kirby in collaboration with Eddie Hackett, Paddy Merrigan, and Liam Higgins, Old Head Golf Links is a visually dramatic links course on a coastal promontory near Kinsale, Ireland. Built in 1997, the course features cliff-top holes, ocean views on every hole, and the ever-present challenge of wind. Its manicured fairways and quick greens create a stern test for golfers of all levels.

Caddie Tip

Strong Atlantic winds demand a strategic approach: keep tee shots low and favor the fairway side furthest from the ocean. On cliffside holes, club up and aim for center greens. Local caddies recommend a conservative approach on holes 4, 7, and 17, and special caution off the 18th tee.

The Main Challenge

The primary challenge is the wind's volatility, which can change club selection dramatically hole-to-hole. Cliffside holes punish errant shots and demand confident ball flight control. The long par 4s and exposed greens add further tests, culminating in a daunting finish with severe penalty for mistakes off the tee and into greens.

The Good

Golfers most love the breathtaking cliff-top setting, constant ocean views, and several holes that play directly along 300-foot vertical drops. The overall sense of drama and novelty combined with high-caliber design elevates every round. Many cite the finish near the lighthouse and the ever-changing wind conditions as unforgettable.

The Not So Good

Common complaints include slow pace of play during busy season, premium greens fee cost, and variable staff friendliness. The exposed coastal location means wind can sometimes make putting and chipping treacherous, and the course layout requires a shuttle or cart for some holes, detracting from traditional walkability.

18

The 18th hole at Old Head Golf Links is a dramatic par 4 played along towering cliffs with the iconic lighthouse in view. The elevated tee shot requires precision, as errant drives can disappear into the Atlantic below. The approach into a green perched near the edge ensures a nerve-wracking finish, making it one of golf's most memorable closing holes.
