One of Merrigan’s greatest achievements, Old Head of Kinsale, is often dubbed a “clifftop” course rather than a traditional links due to its dramatic setting, with the first nine holes running alongside 250-foot cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, making it one of the most breathtaking golfing experiences in Ireland.
Patrick "Paddy" Merrigan was an Irish golf course architect with a background in agricultural science, having graduated from University College Dublin. Initially working as a soil scientist, Merrigan emigrated to Australia in 1969 where he lectured at an agricultural college before returning to Ireland. His passion for golf course architecture was sparked when he served as project manager for the development of the links at Waterville Golf Links, following a design by Eddie Hackett. Merrigan was known for his meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful design ideas.
Over his career, he was involved in designing or remodeling around twenty golf courses in Ireland, including prominent ones like Old Head of Kinsale (in collaboration with Joe Carr), Slieve Russell, Tullamore, Royal Curragh, and Woodenbridge. Merrigan’s work was characterized by a deep respect for the natural landscapes and strategic diversity, creating courses that challenge players while blending beautifully with their surroundings.
