Victoria Golf Club members Doug Bachli and Peter Thomson both achieved remarkable wins in 1954, securing victories in the British Amateur and British Open Championships respectively—the club honors their achievements with a dedicated Bachli Thomson Room lined with their trophies.
Oscar Damman was an Australian golf enthusiast and businessman who, alongside Bill Meader, played a crucial role in founding Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne in 1903. Though neither had formal training in golf course architecture, Damman and Meader displayed great intuition and understanding of the land when they originally designed the course at Fisherman’s Bend before moving it to Cheltenham in 1927. They collaborated with the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who provided architectural review and crafted the bunkering, elevating the course to elite status. Victoria Golf Club has since been recognized as one of Australia’s top golf courses, celebrated for its strategic bunkering, natural beauty, and challenging layout in the iconic Sandbelt region. The course has produced champions like Peter Thomson and Geoff Ogilvy and enjoys a rich history as a premier golfing destination.
