Course Report

Victoria Golf Club is one of the few world-class courses to start with a driveable par 4, making its opening hole particularly famous among architecture aficionados.

About

Victoria Golf Club sits at the heart of Melbourne’s famed Sandbelt and has consistently ranked among Australia’s best. The course showcases classic Sandbelt architecture, strategic bunkering, pure bentgrass greens, and a storied tournament pedigree. Renovations by OCCM in 2018 elevated both design and conditioning, solidifying Victoria’s reputation for strategic play and natural beauty.

Caddie Tip

On the Sandbelt, approach shots run firm and fast; play for extra release on greens and avoid short-siding yourself. Especially on holes 1 and 12, stay below the hole when possible—downhill putts are treacherous with the speed and contour of the Pure Distinction bentgrass greens.

The Main Challenge

Victoria’s greatest challenge lies in its fast, contoured greens set amid deep, sharp-edged bunkers typical of the Sandbelt. Accuracy is essential—errant drives or approaches risk encountering sand or tricky recoveries. High wind days amplify the difficulty, especially with firm turf that rewards precision and creativity.

The Good

Golfers praise Victoria’s strategic bunkering, exceptional greens, and classic Sandbelt routing. The diversity of shot values, particularly on the par 4s, and the course’s maintenance standards consistently impress both members and visitors. Its unique tournament atmosphere and the camaraderie in the welcoming clubhouse are also highlights.

The Not So Good

Some visiting golfers have noted that rough can be inconsistent and that course accessibility is limited due to strict member policies. Guests seek even greater variety on the back nine, and non-members sometimes wish for expanded tee times or visitor privileges.

Signature Hole:

#

1

The par-4 1st hole (255 yards) offers a rare driveable opener on a world-class course. Players must decide between an aggressive play at the green or a strategic iron layup. Well-protected by bunkers and out of bounds, this unique starting hole sets the tone with a risk-reward decision right from the first tee.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The celebrated two-story clubhouse features a stunning bar, dining rooms, and luxurious guest accommodation. Visitors can stay overnight and enjoy high-quality locker rooms, meeting spaces, and attentive service. The terrace offers sweeping course views, enhancing the club’s social atmosphere.

Practice Facilities

Victoria offers a quality short game area, putting greens, and a modest driving range optimized for warm-up. Instructional services and a modern pro shop are available. While the range is not extensive, chipping and pitching zones prepare you for the signature Sandbelt turf and hazards.
