About

When The European Club opened in 1992, Ruddy personally collected fees at the gate, welcoming players and keeping a close eye on the course he built almost entirely with his own labor and that of his son. The course record of 67 is held by Tiger Woods, testament to its challenge and prestige.

Pat Ruddy is one of Ireland’s most prolific golf course architects and a lifelong devotee of the game. Starting as a good amateur player, Ruddy transitioned into golf writing and publishing, editing numerous golf magazines, and writing articles and books on golf. He is recognized internationally as a leading architect of links golf courses.

Ruddy’s major works include original designs like The European Club, Ballyliffin Glashedy, and Rosapenna Sandy Hills, as well as significant remodeling projects at Portsalon, Rosapenna Old, Donegal, and Ballyliffin Old. Ruddy took on the remarkable challenge of designing and building The European Club himself with his son Gerald, spending five years laboring through the demanding dune environment at Brittas Bay. The course is highly regarded globally and frequently ranks in the world’s top 100.

Besides links courses, Ruddy has designed renowned inland layouts including Druids Glen and Druids Heath. Known for his dedication, passion, and hands-on approach, Pat Ruddy remains committed to nurturing and developing his courses, aiming to create some of the world’s best and most enjoyable golf experiences.
