About

One of Roger Packard’s courses at Cantigny Golf Club in Illinois features a bunker designed in the shape of comic-book hero Dick Tracy.

Roger Packard is a prolific American golf course architect renowned for shaping the Midwest golf landscape and for his international projects. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Packard began his journey in golf course design as a teenager, working for his father, Edward Lawrence (Larry) Packard, himself a respected architect. He earned a degree in landscape architecture from Colorado State University in 1969 before officially joining the family firm. Over the next several decades, Packard became one of the most active architects in Illinois and the surrounding region, with more than 60 courses in Illinois alone and over 250 courses worldwide attributed to his name. His portfolio includes notable works such as Eagle Ridge Resort (including the acclaimed 'The General'), Cantigny Golf Club, and Trappers Turn Golf Club. In 1988 he formed Packard & North with Andy North, expanding his reach. Later in his career, Packard lived and worked in Asia, bringing his designs to markets like China. His imaginative design touches, such as the comic-book themed bunker at Cantigny, are celebrated by golfers and critics alike.
