Course Report
Northern Pines was ranked as the #10 course in Montana by Golf Digest and is considered a hidden gem among Flathead Valley’s golf scene.
About
Northern Pines Golf Club, designed by two-time US Open Champion Andy North and Roger Packard, is a striking 18-hole course in Kalispell, Montana. Featuring two distinct nines—links-inspired front and a parkland-style back bordering the Stillwater River—it offers players scenic vistas, elevation changes, and impeccably maintained greens. Renowned as one of Montana’s premier public courses, it is open April through October.
Caddie Tip
The front nine offers wide targets but windy, exposed lies—aim for the safe side and control trajectory. On the back nine, take extra club when playing uphill and avoid the river on strategic holes; club selection is key in shifting elevations. Approach shots demand precision as the greens are fast and subtly contoured, rewarding good placement and short-game skill.
The Main Challenge
The most demanding test is the back nine’s river corridor, where elevation changes and doglegs force players to shape shots and control distances. Well-bunkered greens and several risk-reward holes tempt aggressive play but penalize wayward shots. Fast, sloping greens reward touch and placement rather than power.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the variety between the links-style front nine and the tree-lined, river-adjacent back nine. The spectacular Flathead Valley scenery, especially the peaceful Stillwater River on the back, provides memorable mountain vistas. The smooth, fast greens and thoughtful layout challenge and delight all player types, often cited as the best conditioned greens in the area.
The Not So Good
Some golfers mention slow play during busy periods, particularly weekends, as a recurring issue. Others would like to see ongoing upgrades to bunker consistency and more clear signage between holes. Some beginners find the challenge level intimidating due to demanding approach shots and firm, fast greens.
