Course Report

The club’s original incarnation featured play across desert terrain with sand greens before transitioning to grass greens and its current site in 1928.

About

Albuquerque Country Club is New Mexico’s oldest and most prestigious private course, originally founded in 1914 and redesigned by John Van Kleek in 1928. Set in a parkland environment near the Rio Grande, the 18-hole course features tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes, and contoured greens. The Club is known for its ambiance, classic course feel, and full array of facilities.

Caddie Tip

Stay below the hole on approach shots since the contoured greens can be deceptively quick. The mature tree lines require accurate driving, and the flat layout encourages aggressive play but beware of subtle doglegs and well-placed fairway bunkers throughout your round.

The Main Challenge

Accuracy is the primary challenge, as mature trees line nearly every fairway, penalizing missed drives. Subtle elevation changes and small, sloping greens add to the difficulty, calling for precise iron play and smart course management to avoid tough recovery shots.

The Good

Members consider the course’s park-like setting and mature trees as its greatest asset, providing a peaceful and classic atmosphere in the heart of Albuquerque. The constant green conditions amid New Mexico’s desert landscape make it a unique oasis, and the club’s community feel is especially cherished among locals.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention the need for modernization of certain facilities and occasional inconsistent conditioning on the greens, particularly during the hottest months. Improved drainage and fairway maintenance have also been raised in member feedback and online reviews at times.
