Course Report

The entire site was built from a flat industrial port, using millions of cubic yards of fill to create manmade dunes up to 100 feet high, transforming the landscape into a convincing links reminiscent of the British Isles.

About

Bayonne Golf Club, designed by Eric Bergstol, is a private links-style course on the Hudson River with sweeping views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Crafted from a brownfield site into dramatic dunes, it offers a unique seaside golfing experience, mimicking classic British and Irish links, with challenging holes and authentic links grass.

Caddie Tip

Stay below the wind—Bayonne’s exposed layout means it’s often breezy, so club up on approaches. On the raised greens, avoid short-siding yourself; use the ample fairway width for positioning. Trust local caddies for reads, as undulations and wind direction can be deceptive, especially near the waterfront.

The Main Challenge

The relentless, ever-present wind and elevation changes make Bayonne highly challenging. Navigating blind shots, deep dunes, and capricious gusts requires strategic planning on every hole. Tough greens surrounded by runoffs reward accurate, well-placed approaches but quickly punish poor execution, demanding focus throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers rave about the dramatic, links-like setting, which feels like Ireland or Scotland but with breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop. The course’s elevation changes and giant dunes deliver a sense of adventure rare in American golf, providing memorable, visually stunning holes throughout the round.

The Not So Good

Members and guests occasionally note that, while the wind adds to the authenticity and challenge, it can make some days extremely tough, particularly for average players. Some also wish for more accessibility, as play is restricted to members and their guests, limiting the opportunity to experience the course for many golf fans.
