Course Report

Bear Valley is the only golf course on Kodiak Island, offering unique Alaskan golf experiences and daylight that extends late into the evening during summer solstice.

About

Bear Valley Golf Course is Kodiak Island’s only golf facility, featuring 9 scenic holes and designed by Richard Blackburn and Wayne Berry. Operated by the U.S. Coast Guard but open to the public, it offers a driving range, pro shop, rental clubs, and carts. The course is known for its spectacular vistas and challenging Alaskan conditions, open roughly May through October.

Caddie Tip

The course can play very differently day-to-day due to shifting wind and weather, so check conditions before you play. Focus on accuracy over distance, as rough and native terrain can be punishing. Bring extra layers and be prepared for rain or wind at any time.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect of Bear Valley is contending with the unpredictable Alaskan weather—gusty winds, sudden rain, and shifting conditions can make club selection and shot control challenging. Natural hazards and thick native brush make accuracy essential throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers love the rare opportunity to play in a genuine coastal Alaskan setting with mountain views and extended daylight in summer. The friendly atmosphere and isolation from busy crowds make for a relaxing, unhurried round, enjoyed by both locals and visitors seeking something different.

The Not So Good

Players occasionally note that course conditions can vary with Alaskan weather, leading to soft fairways and unpredictable greens. Facilities are basic compared to mainland courses and some golfers wish for more advanced practice areas or improved drainage on certain holes.
