Course Report
Golfers often comment on the added distance achieved in the thin mountain air at 6,500 feet, making this one of Montana’s longest-playing courses by carry.
About
Big Sky Resort Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout designed by Arnold Palmer in the early 1970s. Situated at 6,500 feet above sea level, the course offers spectacular mountain views, especially of Lone Peak, and plays along the West Fork of the Gallatin River. The layout is known for its scenic beauty, strategic holes, and a memorable mountain golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Take at least one extra club throughout your round, as shots tend to travel farther at this high elevation. Pay special attention to approach shots—greens are well guarded and long putts are common. Watch for subtle breaks influenced by the surrounding mountains.
The Main Challenge
Course defense comes primarily from tight, tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering, and testy mountain greens. Accuracy is key, especially on holes adjacent to the river. Course management is crucial as elevation changes and subtly breaking greens can be deceptive for newcomers.
The Good
Golfers rave about the stunning views of Lone Peak and the tranquil setting alongside the river, which make every round at Big Sky Resort memorable. The combination of mountain scenery, wildlife sightings, and the unique playability at high altitude provides a distinct and invigorating golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some players feel that value for money could be improved, especially as rates are higher than comparable public courses in the region. Additionally, conditioning can vary late in the season, and pace of play occasionally slows during peak summer weekends.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The finishing 18th hole is a memorable par 4 set against the backdrop of the surrounding peaks. It demands a solid drive and a precise approach, with water coming into play near the green and a gallery-friendly setting by the clubhouse, offering a dramatic conclusion to the round.
Clubhouse
Amenities include the Bunker Deck & Grill for dining and après-golf drinks, a well-stocked pro shop with the latest gear and clothing, locker rooms, and club repair services. Event spaces and league/tournament management are offered throughout the season.
Practice Facilities
Expect a full-length driving range with mountain views, a large putting green, practice bunker, and chipping areas. Lessons and clinics are offered for all levels, and the staff is knowledgeable and welcoming. Equipment rentals and junior programs are available.
