Course Report
The original course was destroyed by a '2000-year flood' in 2008, and the current Black Jack’s Crossing was rebuilt and reopened in 2011. The name honors US General 'Black Jack' Pershing, with local history connected to both Pershing and Pancho Villa.
About
Black Jack’s Crossing is a spectacular 18-hole desert golf course at Lajitas Golf Resort in far West Texas. Designed by Hall of Famer Lanny Wadkins and opened in 2011, the course features stunning mountain and river views, dramatic elevation changes, and generous fairways surrounded by native desert. Ranked the #1 course in Texas that you can play.
Caddie Tip
Play for the generous landing areas, but be wary of swirling desert winds, especially on elevated holes. On the back nine, club selection is paramount as elevation can significantly affect distance, particularly on holes with dramatic elevation changes like the 14th. Approach shots often require one more club than you think.
The Main Challenge
The course’s biggest challenge is the wind, which can change dramatically throughout the round and adds to the difficulty of long approach shots on elevated holes. Navigating desert waste areas and sloped greens demands precision. The back nine’s elevation changes and intimidating visuals test shot-making skills.
The Good
Golfers rave about the absolutely stunning scenery, with panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains and the Rio Grande from several elevated tees and greens. The course delivers a true sense of adventure and isolation, making rounds at Black Jack’s Crossing feel like a once-in-a-lifetime golf getaway.
The Not So Good
Due to its remote location, conditions can fluctuate seasonally and some golfers desire more consistent turf quality. The desert climate means certain areas can become firm and brown, and pace of play may slow during peak resort occupancy if beginner groups are present.
Signature Hole:
#
14
The par-4 14th hole is the signature at Black Jack’s Crossing, perched high above the Rio Grande with the Chisos Mountains in the distance. This hole features a dramatic, elevated tee shot with breathtaking panoramic views into Mexico and Big Bend National Park, making it one of the most memorable holes in Texas.
Clubhouse
Amenities include a comfortable clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant and bar, and a shaded patio with panoramic views. The Lajitas Resort features luxury lodging, a spa, shooting sports center, and horseback riding for a full resort experience.
Practice Facilities
The resort offers a full driving range, putting and chipping green, and areas for bunker practice. Facilities are spacious, well-maintained, and situated to take advantage of mountain views, providing a quality warm-up experience before your round.
