Course Report
The Albatros Course was the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup and will host the 2024 Olympic golf competition, making it one of only a handful of courses globally to hold both events.
About
Le Golf National's Albatros Course, designed by Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge, is France's premier public championship layout. Famed for hosting the Ryder Cup and multiple Opens, it features dramatic water hazards, strategic bunkering, and significant undulations that challenge elite and everyday golfers. Its links-like feel and stadium mounding make for exciting spectator events.
Caddie Tip
Stay patient over the closing stretch—holes 15 through 18 all feature major water hazards. The greens are large and undulating, so approach shots need to be on the right section for no three-putting. Plays longer when windy, and recovery from bunkers is tricky due to steep faces.
The Main Challenge
The demanding finishing stretch—holes 15 through 18—continually tests golfers with forced carries over water, swirling winds, and pressure-packed approaches. Particularly on 18, the island green penalizes missed shots; mental focus and precise club selection are essential for scoring.
The Good
Golfers praise the drama and challenge of the closing holes, especially with water in play at 15, 16, 17, and 18. The stadium-style layout and exciting mounding allow spectators to watch from many vantage points, giving every round a tournament feel. The course is fair, visually striking, and memorable at nearly every hole.
The Not So Good
Players often cite the extensive water hazards and wind exposure as tough for higher handicaps. On busy days, pace of play slows due to overall difficulty. Some guests suggest better cart path routing and more frequent maintenance for bunkers, especially after rain.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The par-4 18th is Albatros's signature finale, renowned for its sweeping dogleg and iconic island green. Water guards the entire left side and envelops the putting surface, demanding a bold approach. This finisher has determined championships including the Ryder Cup, routinely thrilling both pros and fans with its drama.
Clubhouse
The modern clubhouse features locker rooms, three restaurants, bar, pro shop, and multiple event spaces. The adjoining Novotel provides upscale accommodation, conference facilities, spa, and overlooks the course’s most exciting finishing stretch.
Practice Facilities
Extensive practice areas include two full driving ranges, huge putting greens, dedicated short game zones, and special chipping areas built for the Ryder Cup. All areas are open to guests and maintained to tournament standards.
