Course Report

The golf course covers 378 acres alongside the Snake River and is widely regarded as one of Idaho's most beautiful and exclusive private clubs.

About

Blue Lakes Country Club, designed by Francis L. James in 1948, occupies a stunning site overlooking the Snake River. The layout offers 18 holes across a scenic, secluded canyon with tree-lined fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and water in play on several holes. Renowned for its natural beauty and strategic challenge, this private club consistently ranks among Idaho’s top courses.

Caddie Tip

Play for position off the tee—many holes reward accuracy over length due to doglegs and elevation changes. Pay special attention to wind in the canyon; it swirls unpredictably and can influence club selection, especially on the dramatic par-3 6th. Greens are quick and tend to break toward the river—read putts carefully.

The Main Challenge

The course’s toughest aspect is the combination of narrow, tree-lined fairways and significant elevation changes, which demand accuracy off the tee and careful club selection. The swirling canyon winds contribute another layer of challenge, especially on exposed holes by the river, where misjudged shots can be severely penalized.

The Good

Golfers love the secluded, tranquil setting in the Snake River canyon, which provides spectacular views and a sense of privacy rarely found elsewhere. The dramatic elevation changes and challenging holes combine with the club’s welcoming atmosphere to create a memorable overall experience.

The Not So Good

Some members and guests mention that the remote location and limited practice facility space can pose logistical challenges, especially during busy member events. The greens, while usually in good condition, can become quite fast and firm during dry stretches, making approach shots difficult to hold.

Signature Hole:

#

6

No items found.

The signature hole is the par-3 6th, which plays dramatically across the Snake River canyon to a small green perched on the far side. The tee shot demands both precision and nerve, with water and cliffs threatening any miss, making it one of Idaho’s most picturesque and memorable par 3s.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse provides locker rooms, a restaurant, lounge, and banquet facilities with panoramic views of the canyon. Members enjoy full-service dining, casual areas, and event space. The atmosphere is relaxed but refined and includes a pro shop with apparel and golf supplies.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Blue Lakes Country Club offers a driving range, short game area, and putting green. The practice areas are scenic, though not the largest, and provide a peaceful spot for warm-up or focused work. Staff are attentive, and lessons or clinics are often available by appointment.
