Course Report
Blue Top Ridge was built as a centerpiece for the Riverside Casino & Golf Resort and is sometimes called 'Iowa’s Field of Dreams' for golf due to its midwestern prairie setting.
About
Blue Top Ridge at Riverside Casino is a sprawling 18-hole course designed by acclaimed architect Rees Jones. Opened in 2007, the course stretches over 7,400 yards with a scenic blend of river plains, rolling hills, lakes, and prairie. Offering a championship-level golf destination in east-central Iowa, its dynamic landscape and modern amenities make it a memorable venue for both casual and serious golfers.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee and pay attention to prevailing winds, especially on the longer holes. The course features stretches along the river and elevation changes on the back nine, so club selection and positioning are crucial for scoring well.
The Main Challenge
The course’s toughest tests are its sheer length and dynamic hole variety, especially when the wind picks up along the river. Narrow landing areas and natural hazards, particularly creeks and lakes, punish errant shots, while large, quick greens require a deft touch and smart approach play.
The Good
Golfers love the diverse terrain and dramatic finishing stretch, including the vast views from the back nine and the challenging mix of open prairie, river holes, and hillside elevation. Many highlight the overall conditioning, the memorable 16th and 18th holes, and the well-maintained facilities.
The Not So Good
Some players wish amenities for walkers were improved, as parts of the course can be a tough trek between holes. Others note that while the layout is bold, bunker maintenance and tree growth could be enhanced for optimal playability and aesthetics.
Signature Hole:
#
16
The signature 16th hole at Blue Top Ridge is a dramatic par 5 measuring 665 yards. This brawny hole demands strategic shot placement with a creek splitting the landing areas, presenting both a risk-reward challenge and a memorable finish on this Rees Jones design. Its length and natural hazards make it a highlight of the back nine.
Clubhouse
Amenities include a full-service clubhouse with locker rooms, a pro shop, multiple dining options, banquet space for events, and direct access to the resort and casino facilities. The staff is praised for excellent hospitality and helping round out the golf experience.
Practice Facilities
The course features a state-of-the-art Performance Studio with heated bays, high-speed video swing analysis, a large grass driving range, short game area, and putting greens to help players tune their game year-round.
