Course Report

Bukit Darmo Golf was Jack Nicklaus II’s first course design in Asia and features an aqua driving range that is unique in the region.

About

Designed by Jack Nicklaus II and opened in 1995, Bukit Darmo Golf features 18 varied and challenging holes in Surabaya’s Dukuh Pakis district. The course’s flat, gently undulating terrain is enhanced by lakes, strategic bunkering, and wide fairways. Known for its well-kept conditions, excellent caddies, and distinctive aqua driving range, this public-access layout is regarded as one of East Java’s best golfing experiences.

Caddie Tip

Water hazards and well-placed bunkers come into play on many holes—rely on the caddie’s advice to choose proper lines off the tee, especially on doglegs. Approach shots demand accuracy to avoid quick run-offs near the green. Trust local green reads, as subtle breaks are often deceptive.

The Main Challenge

The layout demands precise approach shots—numerous greens are protected by large bunkers and water hazards, rewarding careful club selection and shot shaping. Fairways are wide but misplayed drives or aggressive lines can find trouble. Strategic mounding and undulating terrain add complexity on many holes.

The Good

Golfers praise the consistent course maintenance, friendly and knowledgeable caddies, and the variety of holes offering different challenges each round. The aqua driving range and relaxing clubhouse amenities add value to the experience, while the setting—close to Surabaya’s city center—adds to the course’s convenience and accessibility.

The Not So Good

Players sometimes comment on slow pace of play during peak weekend times, and a few note that the urban surroundings diminish the sense of escape found at more remote courses. Occasional reports suggest some bunkers would benefit from additional sand or improved drainage after rain.
