Course Report
Bully Pulpit is named after Theodore Roosevelt's famous phrase for the U.S. presidency, and holes are routed over land the president himself once explored. The course is carved directly into the Badlands, and each round offers glimpses of history and natural beauty.
About
Bully Pulpit Golf Course, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, is laid into the dramatic Badlands of North Dakota. Featuring 18 scenic holes that wind through meadows, woodlands, and rugged canyons, it delivers an unforgettable experience and is renowned as one of the Midwest's premier public layouts. The course offers panoramic views and distinct landforms throughout the round.
Caddie Tip
Club selection is vital on the Badlands holes, especially as wind conditions and elevation changes can dramatically affect your shots. Avoid missing left on holes 14–16, where canyon edges drop steeply. Driver is not always the best choice—play strategically to avoid tough up-and-downs.
The Main Challenge
The most demanding stretch at Bully Pulpit is the sequence of holes that scale and descend the Badlands buttes. The unpredictable, often strong winds and dramatic elevation changes make club selection difficult, and errant shots can find deep ravines. Badlands holes require nerve and precise shot-making to score well.
The Good
Golfers rave about Bully Pulpit’s unforgettable Badlands scenery and the way many holes immerse you in natural landforms, offering a striking, ever-changing visual experience. The back nine, especially, is praised for its dramatic butte-top tee boxes and river-hugging fairways, making every round visually spectacular.
The Not So Good
Some players report that heavy summer play can leave areas of the fairways and rough worn in peak months. The rugged topography can also make walking difficult or nearly impossible, so those seeking a walkable course may be disappointed. Watch for windy conditions; they add to the challenge but aren’t always appreciated.
Signature Hole:
#
15
The "Bully Pulpit" par-3 15th hole plays from a soaring butte, offering panoramic Badlands views and a dramatic elevated tee shot down to the sloping right to left green.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers snacks, beverages, a pro shop with logo merchandise, and modern restrooms. After hole 13, a new concessions stand provides refreshments and light fare. The focus is on convenience and a comfortable setting to start and end your round.
Practice Facilities
The course includes a full grass driving range and putting green, both included with your greens fee. Visitors can warm up and practice all clubs before teeing off. Club rentals are available, and the pro shop is well stocked with essentials.
