Course Report

Carter Plantation is the first signature design by PGA champion and Louisiana native David Toms and has been named among Golf Magazine’s 'Top 10 Courses You Can Play.'

About

Carter Plantation, a David Toms signature layout established in 2003, is a celebrated public course in southern Louisiana. The 18-hole, par-72 course stretches over 7,000 yards and artfully navigates live oak flats, cypress wetlands, and pine forests. Recognized on the Audubon Golf Trail and for its top-tier conditioning, the course offers outstanding practice facilities and a friendly, inviting experience.

Caddie Tip

Positioning off the tee is vital, especially with 11 holes featuring water hazards. Favor conservative lines away from trouble, especially on risk-reward par 5s, and prioritize putting below the hole—TifEagle greens tend to run quick and true, demanding a deft short game.

The Main Challenge

The tight corridors through wetlands and stands of pine, and water hazards that come into play on more than half the holes, put a premium on driving accuracy and course management. The green surrounds demand a confident short game, especially on approach shots to elevated or subtly contoured TifEagle surfaces that can test even good putters.

The Good

Golfers rave about the picturesque setting—oak-flanked fairways, serene cypress wetlands, and a tranquil atmosphere unique to south Louisiana. The well-conceived design by David Toms is praised for its fair but strategic layout, encouraging players of all abilities to think through each shot and appreciate the natural character of the property.

The Not So Good

Players occasionally note lapses in maintenance during peak summer humidity, and wish for faster recovery of wet areas after heavy rain. Some visitors would appreciate updated signage and enhanced on-course bathrooms, but overall satisfaction with amenities remains high.

The clubhouse offers a well-stocked pro shop, an acclaimed bar and grill serving local fare, elegant event spaces, and boutique overnight villas. Onsite hospitality draws compliments for friendly service and well-maintained locker and shower facilities.
