Course Report

RTJ Golf Club has hosted more Presidents Cups than any other US venue and was considered Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s personal masterpiece.

About

Robert Trent Jones Golf Club is an exclusive private course in Gainesville, Virginia, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Built in 1991, this parkland layout is renowned for its scenic routing along Lake Manassas and has hosted several major international events including the Presidents Cup and Solheim Cup.

Caddie Tip

Club selection is crucial, especially with frequent swirling winds around the lake. Approach angles into greens matter; missing on the wrong side often means tough recoveries or a watery penalty. The greens are quick—play for less break and keep below the hole.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is the combination of fast, contoured greens and nervy approach shots required over water, especially on holes bordering Lake Manassas. Recovery from the thick bluegrass/fescue rough and deep bunkers further tests players’ precision and course strategy.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the stunning setting along Lake Manassas, impeccably maintained greens, and the strategic brilliance of Jones’s design. The course offers a balanced, challenging test appreciated by top professionals and experienced amateurs alike.

The Not So Good

Some members and guests note that rough conditions on certain holes can be overly penal, particularly for higher handicappers. The club’s exclusivity and pace of play during events or busy weekends can also sometimes feel restrictive.

Signature Hole:

11
