Course Report
Victoria National was carved from an abandoned coal mine and is certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, supporting diverse wildlife and native habitats.
About
Victoria National Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio, is an acclaimed private 18-hole course built on reclaimed mining land near Newburgh, Indiana. Known for its dramatic use of natural water hazards, strategic design, and meticulously maintained bentgrass surfaces, it offers a challenging yet rewarding round in a scenic, secluded setting. The club consistently ranks among America's top modern courses.
Caddie Tip
Conservative play is often wise here; trouble lurks near every green, especially on approaches almost surrounded by water or wetlands. Play to safe landing areas when possible and club up on approach shots to avoid tricky up-and-downs from deep bunkers and native rough. Patience and smart shot selection are key.
The Main Challenge
Victoria National’s defining challenge is its closing stretch, known as 'The Gauntlet'—five of the most difficult finishing holes in American golf. Water, native areas, narrow fairways, and challenging greens force precise execution and mental toughness from tee to green, providing a stern but thrilling test for any golfer.
The Good
Golfers rave about the stunning use of reclaimed land, with holes routed around picturesque lakes, deep ravines, and natural wetlands that demand thoughtful shot-making. The course's challenge is considered exhilarating yet fair, and the solitude, privacy, and quality of bentgrass turf offer a truly world-class modern golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some members and visitors mention infrequent slow play due to the course's overall difficulty and persistent risk-reward decisions that can slow rounds. Also, the abundance of water hazards and penal native areas can frustrate higher-handicap players, especially during windy conditions.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par-3 17th at Victoria National is a visually daunting hole that demands a precise tee shot over water to a small, well-contoured green protected by bunkers and marsh. The wind and swirling conditions make club selection tricky, and missing short or right brings certain trouble, making it a stern late-round test.
Clubhouse
The spacious clubhouse features gourmet dining, a full-service bar, elegant locker rooms, a well-appointed pro shop, and expansive patio seating with course views. Additional amenities include meeting rooms, member lounges, and attentive concierge service, ensuring a luxury golf and social experience.
Practice Facilities
Practice areas are top-tier, including a full-length driving range with bentgrass tees, a comprehensive short game area with multiple bunkers, and several putting greens that closely replicate the course’s championship conditions. On-site instruction and club fitting services are also available for all members and guests.
