Course Report

The club’s origins trace back to members of Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Club, and it has counted numerous prominent politicians and business leaders among its membership since the late 19th century.

About

Chevy Chase Club is a historic, private club founded in 1892, located just outside Washington, D.C. The current 18-hole golf course was originally laid out by Donald Ross in 1910 and then completely redesigned by Charles H. Alison in 1922, with further updates by Arthur Hills in 1998. Known for its mature trees, lush conditions, and exclusive ambience, it is a cherished retreat for Washington elite.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is more important than length at Chevy Chase Club. Fairways are framed by mature trees, and the rough can be penal. Pay attention to the subtle breaks on the greens, and keep approaches below the hole on the fast, undulating putting surfaces.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge at Chevy Chase Club comes from its narrow, tree-lined fairways and small, quick greens. Course management is vital, as the mature parkland layout rewards precision off the tee and clever shot selection. The undulating terrain and deep bunkers add complexity, especially on approach shots and around the greens.

The Good

Most golfers love the serenity and immaculate conditioning of the course, as well as its rich sense of history and tradition. The elegant clubhouse and beautifully landscaped grounds add to the experience, making every visit feel special and exclusive. The strategic design rewards thoughtful play and provides a challenge for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some members have noted that the pace of play can be slow during peak times, and the course may play soft after heavy rains due to its tree-lined, parkland setting. Additionally, the exclusivity and strict dress code may make it feel less welcoming to new guests or those less familiar with traditional club expectations.
