Course Report

Villa d’Este has hosted the Italian Open a record 12 times, more than any other Italian club, cementing its place in European golf history.

About

Circolo Golf Villa d’Este, designed by Peter Gannon in 1926, is set in the scenic woodlands of Montorfano near Lake Como. Known for its undulating fairways lined with chestnut, birch, and stone pine trees, the challenging par-69 layout and storied history make it one of Europe’s most respected classic courses.

Caddie Tip

Approach shots often play from sidehill or downhill lies due to the undulating terrain, so focus on solid contact and favor misses short rather than long. The par 3s are demanding, so club up when in doubt, especially with swirling winds off Lake Montorfano.

The Main Challenge

Villa d’Este’s greatest challenge lies in its tight tree-lined fairways and numerous elevation changes, demanding accuracy and strategic shot placement throughout. Several long par 3s require solid ball-striking, and punishing rough adds a premium to keeping the ball in play.

The Good

Golfers rave about the tranquil atmosphere and the beautiful routing through ancient forests, making each hole feel isolated and uniquely challenging. The combination of natural beauty and classic design creates a sense of escape, with memorable views of the Pre-Alps and Lake Montorfano adding to the charm.

The Not So Good

The par-69 layout, with six par 3s, divides opinion as some players wish for a more traditional mix of par 4s and 5s. Others mention that the clubhouse facilities, though elegant, can feel a step behind modern standards and lack some conveniences expected at top destinations.

Signature Hole:

#

15

No items found.

The 15th hole, a par 4 measuring 464 yards, is the course’s toughest and longest two-shotter. The fairway slopes right to left with uneven lies, and the small, protected green is fronted by a deep left bunker, demanding both length and precision from the tee and into the green.

Clubhouse

Elegant historic clubhouse, fine restaurant with local cuisine, well-appointed locker rooms, six on-site lodges for guests, pro shop stocked with high-end golf equipment and apparel, and inviting terraces overlooking the course.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Full practice range with both outdoor and indoor hitting bays, chipping and putting greens, and PGA professional tuition available. The club features a dedicated academy for personalized instruction and short-game practice areas for all skill levels.
