Course Report

Costa Rica Country Club was Costa Rica's very first golf course and remained the country’s only option for golfers for nearly 25 years after opening.

About

Costa Rica Country Club is a traditional parkland-style 9-hole private golf course in the upscale Escazu area of San José. Opened in 1940 and designed by Charles Donovan, the course is renowned locally for tight tree-lined fairways, undulating terrain, and excellent mountain views. The club offers extensive practice facilities and prestigious social amenities.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee; many fairways are narrow and tree-lined so missing long can be penal. Be especially cautious of water hazards on the right side, and pay attention to swirling mountain winds which can make club selection tricky. Approach shots to large greens should favor the center to avoid difficult bunker recoveries.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect is the combination of tight, tree-lined fairways and large, well-bunkered greens. Errant drives are often punished by trees and tricky lies, while approach shots require precision to avoid the sand. Windy afternoons and hilly terrain add to the strategic challenge.

The Good

Golfers most praise the classic parkland routing and the club's beautiful mountain backdrop. The mature tree-lined fairways and large, undulating greens provide a challenging but rewarding round, and the vibrant clubhouse atmosphere and social scene make every round feel special.

The Not So Good

Many regular players wish the club would further improve drainage in rainy months, update sand trap consistency, and invest in tee box releveling. Some feel the 9-hole layout limits variety for avid golfers and would like more efficient pace of play during peak times.
