Course Report

When it first opened, the club’s main attractions were tennis and indoor bowling—not golf. In fact, golf was only introduced to members in 1897 after one founding member, Alvin S. Lockard, discovered the game in India and brought it back to Indianapolis. He constructed two golf holes and charged an annual fee of just $1 for those interested in trying the “new” Scottish sport

About

The Country Club of Indianapolis features an acclaimed 18-hole course originally designed by Tom Bendelow and later redesigned by Pete Dye in 1992. With rolling terrain, mature trees, and a challenging layout, CCI has hosted high-profile championships, offering a memorable golfing experience in a peaceful parkland setting.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy from the tee is key as many holes play through densely wooded corridors and rolling terrain. Take time to study your approach shots, as the greens are fast and strategically guarded by bunkers. Local knowledge is invaluable for club selection and reading breaks on the large, undulating greens.

The Main Challenge

The demanding layout features narrow fairways through dense woodland and rolling elevation changes, testing creativity and precision. Fast bentgrass greens and strategic bunkering require well-placed shots and tactical game management, particularly during tournament conditions.

The Good

Golfers love the classic design and the unique blend of Tom Bendelow’s early 20th-century vision with Pete Dye’s strategic enhancements. The course’s rich history, well-manicured fairways, and the challenge posed by its wooded holes create an experience that is both nostalgic and engaging for all levels.

The Not So Good

Some frequent guests note the challenge of pace of play during peak times, and a desire for continuous investment in bunker maintenance and practice area upgrades to match top-tier private clubs. Occasional updates to clubhouse facilities are also a recurring member suggestion.
