Course Report

Hale Irwin, the three-time U.S. Open champion, not only designed Coyote Crossing Golf Club but was fully hands-on throughout its creation—from scouting the land to overseeing construction and shaping every hole to fit the rolling Indiana landscape.

About

Coyote Crossing Golf Club is a Hale Irwin-designed, award-winning public course in West Lafayette, Indiana. This 18-hole parkland layout weaves through prairies, wetlands, and forests, featuring bentgrass greens and multiple creek crossings for memorable shot values. The course offers a relaxed, welcoming experience with a large practice area and a scenic clubhouse.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee to avoid trouble—creek crossings and tall native grasses reward accuracy over power. Focus on your approach shots as the bentgrass greens are fast and subtly contoured. Pay special attention to the wind, as it can be unpredictable when the course opens into prairie sections.

The Main Challenge

The course’s primary challenge is precision—the multiple creek crossings, prairie grass rough, and strategic bunkering penalize wayward shots without being unfair. Shifting wind conditions and slick bentgrass greens require thoughtful club selection and touch throughout the round, especially on approach shots.

The Good

Golfers love the variety of holes, with each featuring its own challenge due to clever routing through prairies, creeks, and woodlands. The course’s setting, natural beauty, and conditioning consistently receive praise, as does the friendly and unpretentious atmosphere enhanced by comfortable facilities and a scenic clubhouse.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention that when conditions are wet, a few fairways become soft and cart restrictions are common. Busy weekend mornings can lead to slower pace of play, and a lack of on-course restrooms between certain holes is sometimes noted.
