Course Report
Dalhousie’s bunkering patterns were inspired by The Bear’s Club in Florida, Jack Nicklaus’ personal golf club.
About
Dalhousie Golf Club is a nationally ranked, private club in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, designed by Gary Nicklaus. The course features undulating terrain, mature forests, water features, and a championship layout with zoysia fairways and bentgrass greens. Renowned for its challenging play and pristine conditions, the club also offers extensive practice facilities and a luxurious clubhouse.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee on several holes, as aggressive drives can quickly find challenging hazards and tough lies. Pay close attention to approach shot placement; missing greens on the wrong side can lead to tricky up-and-downs with fast, undulating putting surfaces.
The Main Challenge
The most demanding aspect of Dalhousie is its combination of length, forced carries, and greenside protection. Water hazards and deep bunkers come into play on several holes, and the greens are fast with significant breaks, providing a stern test for approach shots and putting.
The Good
Dalhousie is widely praised for its diverse holes and beautiful natural setting, which incorporates forests, water, and rolling landscapes. Members particularly love the secluded feel, lack of crowds, and pristine course conditioning, which heightens the exclusive, top-tier golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some players express concerns about the difficulty level for higher handicappers, as forced carries and strategically placed hazards can penalize less accurate shots. Occasional slow play on busy days and limited tee availability for non-members are also noted.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a par 4, is recognized for its dramatic finish with water hazards and a demanding approach shot to a well-bunkered green. Framed by mature trees and the clubhouse in the distance, it challenges players’ shot-making and course management skills, making it a memorable conclusion to the round.
Clubhouse
The 15,000-square-foot clubhouse is elegantly appointed with dining rooms, event spaces, locker rooms, and a well-stocked pro shop. Members enjoy a relaxed yet refined atmosphere, on-site instruction, custom club fitting, and a welcoming environment for post-round gatherings.
Practice Facilities
Dalhousie offers a comprehensive practice facility spanning 15 acres with a full driving range, multiple short game areas, practice bunkers, and putting greens. The clubhouse features high-end locker rooms, a pro shop, fine and casual dining, and spacious lounges for relaxation or events.
