Course Report
Hirono was requisitioned and destroyed by the Japanese Imperial Air Force during World War II, later meticulously restored using architect Charles Alison’s original plans and is now considered Japan’s definitive championship venue.
About
Designed by Charles Hugh Alison in 1932 and later renovated by Mackenzie & Ebert, Hirono Golf Club is widely regarded as Japan’s finest layout and arguably the best in Asia. The course features a parkland routing with lush Zoysia fairways, deep bunkering, and a strategic, timeless design. Exclusively private, it consistently ranks among the world’s top courses.
Caddie Tip
Take an extra club on the par 3 5th to safely clear the ravine, as the wind above the gorge can mislead distance control. On the fast Zoysia greens, play for less break than you see and rely on your caddie’s advice for line and pace—local caddies are excellent at reading subtle undulations, especially on approach shots from tricky angles.
The Main Challenge
Hirono’s greatest challenge lies in its bold bunkering, ravines, and elevated green complexes that demand precision on approach shots and strategic decision-making off the tee. The par 3 5th and par 4 18th are especially demanding, requiring players to navigate natural hazards and well-defended greens. Fast greens with subtle slopes further test every part of a player’s game.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the remarkable strategic design by Alison, the immaculate Zoysia fairways, and the club’s historic ambiance. Signature holes, particularly the par 3 5th and the closing stretch, are noted for memorable risk-reward opportunities and the challenge they present. Members value the pristine conditioning, world-class caddy service, and tranquil parkland setting.
The Not So Good
Some visitors have noted that tree density and overplanting in certain areas have reduced options from the original design and affected strategic shot-making. Occasional complaints focus on exclusivity and limited access for non-members, resulting in less international exposure for traveling golfers. Early fall can also be humid with higher risk of rain.
Signature Hole:
#
5
The par 3 5th hole at Hirono Golf Club is renowned for its dramatic ravine carry and beautifully bunkered green complex. Playing from an elevated tee, golfers are challenged to judge both distance and wind, as a deep gorge lies between the tee and a large, undulating Zoysia green protected by rugged bunkers. It is one of the most photographed and revered par 3s in Asia.
Clubhouse
The historic clubhouse features elegant lounges, traditional Japanese and Western dining rooms, spacious locker rooms, and a curated pro shop with exclusive merchandise. Members have access to private meeting rooms, expansive terraces overlooking the 18th green, and attentive staff. The tranquil setting and understated luxury create a unique, prestigious club atmosphere.
Practice Facilities
Hirono offers a grass driving range with multiple target greens, a dedicated short game area, and an excellent putting green. The facilities are well-maintained and designed to give golfers of all levels the chance to properly warm up and fine-tune their game. Range staff are attentive, and balls are provided at the practice house.
