Course Report

Prairie Dunes is one of the best inland 'links' courses, often drawing comparisons to Scottish seaside layouts despite being over 1,000 miles from an ocean.

About

Prairie Dunes Country Club is a world-renowned private golf course just outside Hutchinson, Kansas. Designed originally by Perry Maxwell in 1937 and completed by his son Press Maxwell in 1957, the course is noted for its rolling sandhills, native prairie grasses, and fast, undulating greens. Frequent tournament host and consistently ranked among America’s best courses.

Caddie Tip

Club selection is critical due to strong and shifting winds—many holes play far longer or shorter than their actual yardage. Stay below the hole on approach shots to avoid dangerously quick downhill putts, and don’t be afraid to use the contours around the greens for creative recoveries.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is handling the relentless Kansas winds that sweep the open layout, which can get you in trouble quickly. The native prairie rough is penal and contouring around the green complexes puts a premium on strategy, execution, and unwavering patience throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers most love the challenging links-like design, blending strategic shotmaking with constant wind and beautifully contoured greens. The natural sandhills and prairie grasses provide a rare inland setting with exceptional movement and character, making every round feel unique and memorable.

The Not So Good

Most feedback centers on accessibility—Prairie Dunes is private and tee times are highly restricted, so playing opportunities for non-members are rare. Some players also note that stretches can be exceptionally difficult for higher handicaps, especially in strong wind.

Signature Hole:

#

8

No items found.

The par 4 8th hole is widely regarded as Prairie Dunes’ signature. Playing slightly uphill with a dogleg right, the hole is defined by ferocious native grasses, demanding an exacting tee shot and a precise approach to a well-protected green. The ever-present Kansas wind amplifies the challenge and drama.

Clubhouse

No items found.

Members enjoy a classic clubhouse with multiple dining venues, event spaces, an outdoor pool, modern fitness center, and indoor and outdoor tennis/pickleball courts. Onsite lodging is available, and service is attentive and reflective of top private club standards.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Expect a full suite of practice offerings: expansive bentgrass range, dedicated short game areas with bunkers, large putting green, and a wedge practice zone.
