Course Report

Desert Forest is said to be the first desert golf course built in the U.S., pioneering the now-popular desert golf style.

About

Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Arizona, was designed by Robert 'Red' Lawrence in 1962. Recognized as the first true desert-style course, it’s revered for a minimalist, natural routing fully integrated into the Sonoran desert. The course’s impeccable conditions, absence of water hazards, and subtle elevation changes attract serious players seeking a pure, challenging golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Course knowledge is critical: focus on accurate tee shots to avoid the dense desert rough, play conservatively to the wide sides of receptive greens, and respect elevation and wind, which subtly affect club selection. Overaggressive lines are punished, so patience and strategic planning will yield better scores.

The Main Challenge

The real test is precision: fairways are framed by thick native desert, and any missed green invites tough recoveries. There are no water hazards, but the undulating native ground, subtle elevation changes, and always firm, fast greens demand strategy and course management. The course can be especially challenging in firm conditions and with swirling desert winds.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the purity of the layout, the natural desert setting untouched by intrusive development, and the exceptional playing conditions. The design rewards precision and strategic thinking, offering a uniquely peaceful, unhurried golf experience. Members value the camaraderie and the chance to walk on one of the most original desert courses in the world.

The Not So Good

Some visitors and members have noted the lack of practice facilities compared to newer, larger clubs. The absence of on-site fitness amenities and a relatively small clubhouse can make it feel less all-encompassing compared to high-end modern private clubs. The remote location may also limit some off-course conveniences.

Signature Hole:

#

14

The par-4 14th is often considered Desert Forest’s signature hole, featuring a gently bending dogleg left bordered by rugged desert vegetation. Precise placement is a must from the elevated tee, with approach shots challenged by natural contours and subtle green movement. Its breathtaking native beauty and strategic demands epitomize the unique character of the course.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse offers a classic, understated setting with casual and fine dining, locker rooms, pro shop, and social spaces for member gatherings. While not opulent, amenities emphasize comfort and service. Regular social events support a close-knit, golf-centric membership.

Practice Facilities
