Course Report

English Turn hosted the New Orleans PGA Tour event from 1989–2004 and again in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina, and serves as home course for Tulane University's golf teams.

About

English Turn Golf & Country Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1988, is a private championship parkland course just minutes from downtown New Orleans. Former host of PGA Tour events, it features water hazards on 17 of 18 holes, undulating greens, and impressive plantation-style clubhouse facilities. The layout provides a challenging and scenic experience for members and their guests.

Caddie Tip

Precision off the tee and smart layups are essential, as water comes into play on nearly every hole. The small, undulating greens offer little margin for error, so avoid short siding yourself and play approach shots to the wider sides of greens. On the back nine, club selection is paramount given the wind exposure and intimidating water hazards.

The Main Challenge

English Turn’s greatest challenge is its ever-present water hazards—17 of 18 holes bring water into play. The small, sloping greens reward only the best approach shots, while swirling winds and deep bunkers often punish aggressive plays. The closing holes provide a demanding finish, especially with tough pin locations.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the variety of challenging holes and the strategic water features that frame the course. Players highlight the pristine conditioning, welcoming staff, and the impressive plantation-style clubhouse. The setting offers tranquillity and isolation from city noise despite proximity to downtown, and the storied PGA Tour history adds to the overall experience.

The Not So Good

Common critiques focus on drainage issues after heavy rain, with some areas becoming soggy or limiting cart access. Additionally, members and visitors occasionally cite slow pace of play on busy days and the challenge of maintaining pristine turf conditions year-round in New Orleans’ humid, rainy climate.

Signature Hole:

#

15

No items found.

Hole 15 is a par 5 and the signature hole at English Turn. It features a dramatic island green that has challenged PGA Tour players and members alike. The approach is nerve-wracking, demanding precision to avoid the water surrounding the green. A well-executed tee shot offers a tempting risk-reward opportunity for reaching the green in two, making it a memorable highlight.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The plantation-style clubhouse features elegant dining, full-service locker rooms, private event spaces, a well-stocked golf shop, and a bar with panoramic views. Additional facilities include tennis courts, swimming pool, and private meeting rooms, offering a resort-like experience for members and guests.

Practice Facilities
