Course Report
The course was designed on over 425 acres of prime land, making it one of the largest private golf developments in Maine.
About
Falmouth Country Club is a private, 18-hole championship course in Maine designed by Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva, opening in 1988. The layout offers bentgrass greens and fairways, scenic New England terrain, and a challenging mix that rewards strategy for all skill levels. Its premier facilities, course variety, and reputation have helped define it as Greater Portland’s top private golf venue.
Caddie Tip
Play smart off the tee—Falmouth’s tree-lined fairways and strategic bunkers demand accuracy. Don’t always reach for driver; use fairway woods or irons when placement is key, especially on doglegs. Trust your putting stroke on the quick, true bentgrass greens. Pay attention to wind on exposed holes, and adjust accordingly. Always check pin position as several greens have tricky contours.
The Main Challenge
Falmouth Country Club’s greatest challenge is its demanding par 4s and thick rough. Many drives require thoughtful club selection due to narrow landing areas lined with mature trees. Bunkers and water hazards are strategically placed to penalize wayward shots, and the greens are fast, undulating, and well-protected, demanding touch and precision throughout your approach and short game.
The Good
Members praise the course’s immaculate maintenance and the strategic, playable design that offers interest for all abilities. The layout features a beautiful blend of rolling terrain, mature trees, and a balance of risk-reward opportunities. Golfers especially love the smooth, fast bentgrass greens and the range of picturesque holes that make every round fresh and engaging.
The Not So Good
Some players note that pace of play can slow during busy weekends. Others mention the layout’s less memorable finishing stretch and wish for greater architectural variety in the closing holes. Non-members may find access to be a challenge, and some desire further enhancement of on-course signage or tee box modernization to improve the overall golf experience.
