Course Report
Yeamans Hall’s greens were restored in 2017 to their original Seth Raynor dimensions, becoming some of the largest and most architecturally intriguing in the U.S.—totaling over 140,000 square feet.
About
Yeamans Hall Club is a renowned private golf course designed by Seth Raynor in 1925 and occupies a historic Lowcountry property near Charleston, South Carolina. The course features classic template holes, strategic bunkering, wide fairways, and a scenic, peaceful setting along the Cooper River. Its elite conditioning and rich history make it one of America’s most respected private clubs.
Caddie Tip
Navigating Yeamans Hall successfully requires careful strategy off the tee, as many bunkers sit in the middle of fairways. Approach shots should consider the significant contours and tiers on Raynor’s large greens. Take advantage of the run-up options whenever possible, especially on the template holes, and don’t underestimate the subtle breezes off the Cooper River.
The Main Challenge
The most difficult aspect of Yeamans Hall is managing the strategic bunkering, particularly the central fairway hazards that demand precise placement from the tee. The large Raynor greens, with their tiers and subtle run-offs, require exceptional putter control and approach accuracy. Wind from the river can make club selection tricky.
The Good
Golfers rave about the strategic interest and variety of Raynor’s template holes, the immaculate turf conditions, and the peaceful ambiance. The course’s seclusion and historical setting create a truly special experience, offering an escape from modern distractions and a reverence to golden age architecture.
The Not So Good
The club's exclusivity and private member policy mean very few outside guests ever get to play. Some visitors note that the routing crosses some internal roads, which may slightly interrupt the otherwise pure golf experience. During periods of heavy rain, sections of the property can become soft, and biting insects are occasionally a nuisance.
Signature Hole:
#
6
The 6th hole at Yeamans Hall Club, the renowned “Redan,” is a classic Seth Raynor par-3. Featuring a sloping, angled green guarded by deep bunkers, it demands both accuracy and strategy. This signature hole beautifully showcases Raynor’s template design and is a memorable highlight of the course.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers elegant dining, traditional locker rooms, member lounges, and attentive service. The atmosphere is refined but understated, with a strong sense of tradition and privacy. There are also accommodations for overnight guests and beautiful porch views across the course.
Practice Facilities
Yeamans Hall provides an excellent grass driving range, dedicated short game chipping area, and a large putting green. These facilities are designed for members to warm up and refine every aspect of their game in a relaxed, uncrowded environment.
