Course Report

Triceratops footprints and other fossils can be viewed next to the 12th green, giving the course its name and a truly one-of-a-kind feature.

About

Fossil Trace Golf Club, designed by Jim Engh, is set in the foothills of Golden, Colorado. The course is renowned for its prehistoric fossils adjacent to the 12th green and remnants of clay mining equipment throughout the layout. Acclaimed for its undulating greens, strategic bunkering, and fun, quirky design, it offers both challenge and memorable scenery.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is vital—many holes feature dramatic elevation changes and quirky hazards, including fairway boulders and funneling slopes. Aim for the fat side of the greens and pay attention to pin placements, as undulating putting surfaces can lead to three-putts if approached from the wrong angle.

The Main Challenge

Toughest challenges include navigating narrow landing areas amid elevation swings, avoiding creative bunkering, and managing undulating greens that can be fast and tricky. Many holes require precision rather than length, and local features like boulders and water hazards can turn a slight miss into a big score.

The Good

Golfers love the intriguing prehistoric fossils and mining relics scattered throughout the course, as well as the dramatic elevation changes and creative green complexes. The unique local history and friendly staff leave a lasting impression, and panoramic foothills views add to the enjoyment.

The Not So Good

The course can get busy, especially on weekends, leading to slow pace of play on occasion. Some find the quirky design elements, like rocks in the fairway, to be a bit gimmicky or punishing to less accurate players. Tee times can be hard to secure during peak months.

Signature Hole:

#
